How to show hidden files and folders on macOS

If you need to display all the hidden files and folders that macOS hides by default, there's a simple command to enter in the terminal to do this. Many of these hidden files and folders are related to critical operating system and configuration components and probably should not be modified unless you know what you're doing.

# enable show all files
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
killall Finder

# disable show all files
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
killall Finder
